Specialist communications company SentForever.com is offering an unusual alternative to the traditional greetings card by using radio waves rather than paper to convey messages of congratulations, remembrance messages and love messages.

Personalised messages and announcements can be created online and are transmitted at the speed of light via a dedicated BT transmission dish situated at the historic Goonhilly earth station in Cornwall. Each message is designed to last – quite literally – forever: an eternal memory of the sender. From transmission, the message travels over the Mediterranean coast at a height of 450 miles and within five hours leaves the solar system to continue its journey through space and remain in the universe for all time.

Other documents such as manuscripts, drawings, photographs, poetry and music - once converted to digital format - can also be sent in this way to provide a lasting and highly unusual gift or treasured keepsake for future generations.

According to market research analyst Mintel, the UK greeting card industry is the most successful of its type in the world and worth over £1.3 billion annually - in 2006 an estimated 800 publishers produced more than 2.87 billion greeting cards for the well wishing British public. Since launching in January 2008, SentForever’s ethereal alternative has been used to relay a plethora of good wishes for all occasions including birthday messages, Valentine’s day and Mother’s day, and even to convey messages intended for the deceased.

The cost of the service starts at £9.95. Once transmitted, a message can be tracked to see how far it has travelled and the recipient will receive a certificate of transmission detailing its contents; a premium silver service also provides the recipient with a solid silver keepsake. Police in Bournemouth have cautioned a woman who modified a Yachtmaster certificate that she downloaded from Facebook and used it to charter a yacht.

The woman hired a yacht last summer from a charter company, who did not notice that the document was fraudulent.

A spokesperson from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) said that the yacht was returned undamaged, but the certificate she used was later found to be a forgery.

The 29-year-old woman voluntarily attended Bournemouth Police Station on Friday 22 February where she was formally cautioned for using forged material to obtain a boat.

Police decided against prosecuting the woman as she was of previous good character and had paid for the charter of the yacht in full.

Captain Andrew Phillips of the MCA warned seafarers against posting certification on the internet and advised anyone who has uploaded such documents to remove them. Source - Yachting Monthly, 26 February 2008

Frank Cammas and his crew were on the way to setting a new round the world record when the huge tri started to break up just 80 miles from Dunedin and they were airlifted off the overturned trimaran, all safely and uninjured, less that three hours after the capsize.

I have been following the progress of Alex Thomson closely, he and his co-skipper Andrew Cape have had a strange race, firstly breaking the 24 hour speed record, which Alex held before, which now stands at 501nm, this is strange as the average wind strength on this 24 hours compared to the time before was 8-10 knots difference, also this is the first time Alex has been able to finish a Circumnavigation without serious gear failure since he did the Global Challenge race.

Hugo Boss, the sponsors of the boat, must be extremely happy with this result, it shows Alex is capable of great things (which we all knew anyway), its only a shame that they had to make a pit stop to make repairs. Any pitstop on the race resulted in a minimum 48 hour stay in port. Alex and Capey were only 57 hours behind the winner on Paprec-Virbac 2. I ask what might of happened if they hadn’t stopped?Alex has shown that he will now be threat in the next Vendee Globe at the end of this year, he has a fair few months to fine tune all that he has learnt from this race, which can only make him faster.
